Auto Insurance Support for Graduating Seniors

Many graduates will end up owning and insuring a vehicle. The process of qualifying for a new insurance policy can be challenging for a variety of reasons.  One of those reasons is whether a prospective policyholder has prior, continuous auto insurance coverage, which is a standard underwriting guideline all insurance carriers consider.  MHSAA has developed a program to help alleviate this challenge.

Auto Insurance for Enrolled Seniors

As a service to our fellow alumni, MHSAA has obtained a commercial auto policy, known as a non-owned liability policy, that can allow for graduating seniors to be added as drivers while still enrolled at MHS. Upon graduation, young alumni will be able to show prior, continuous coverage for a minimum of six months and a maximum of one year.  There is no cost for seniors to participate in this program. This is funded exclusively by MHSAA to assist our young alumni brothers and sisters in getting reliable and affordable automobile coverage.

Here’s how it works:

Seniors who have obtained a Pennsylvania drivers license may join the program during their senior year. Enrollment is effective  December 1 through November 30 of the following year. Students who obtain a license after December 1 may enroll, but will have a shorter coverage period.

After graduation, upon request, MHSAA can provide proof of insurance (either a ‘letter of experience’ or a copy of the policy declarations) to verify this coverage, which can then be provided as prior proof of insurance when those alumni look to obtain their own policies.

This program does not guarantee that the alumnus will qualify for their own auto insurance policy since all carriers have their own  underwriting guidelines, but this piece of the puzzle can help provide a more competitive rating.
